While Miraca Life Sciences™ is recognized as a leading provider of academic-caliber GI pathology diagnostic services, did you know about our expertise in hepatopathology? Several pathologists at Miraca Life Sciences have extensive experience and expertise in hepatopathology, including medical liver disease, hepatic neoplasms and liver transplant biopsies. Unless fellowship trained, most pathologists have very little exposure to hepatopathology during their residency training, especially in medical liver diseases. While routine cases, such as hepatitis C, might not be a problem, more complex cases, such as autoimmune hepatitis or primary biliary cirrhosis, pose a challenge for a pathologist without specialty training.
At Miraca Life Sciences, the liver pathology service is comprised of several fellowship-trained pathologists including nationally known leaders in the field of hepatopathology, many of whom have held professorship positions at leading academic institutions. All our hepatopathologists have extensive experience in both adult and pediatric liver diseases and routinely interact closely with clinicians in order to render accurate diagnoses. In addition, consensus conferences are held to discuss difficult cases. Primary members of our liver service include:
Dr. Salima Haque has more than 18 years of experience in liver pathology including transplant pathology, having run the liver pathology service at Tulane since 1994 where she served as Professor and Head of Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology. She has been named to the “Best Doctors in America” list every year since 2004. Dr. Haque has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and has been sought after nationally as a lecturer on GI and liver pathology. Her interests are NASH, viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, drug-induced liver disease, biliary cirrhosis, hepatic neoplasms and liver transplantation.
Dr. Mukunda B. Ray is currently the Medical Director of Miraca Life Sciences Laboratories in Phoenix, Arizona. He joined Miraca Life Sciences from the University of Louisville, where he was a Professor of Pathology and Gastroenterology for more than ten years. Dr. Ray completed his residency and fellowship in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Leuven and the University of Brussels, Belgium. He also obtained a Ph.D. with a thesis on hepatitis b at the University of Leuven. He has published over 70 peerreviewed articles, book chapters, and monographs in the area of GI and liver pathology and on immunohistochemistry. Dr. Ray has extensive experience in viral hepatitis, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, alcoholic liver disease and liver transplantation. He has received numerous awards including the “Liver Foundation Award” for excellence and dedication in the progress of liver disease. His current research interest includes genesis of Mallory Bodies in alcoholic and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and autoimmune gastritis.
Dr. Shari Taylor, another nationally renowned hepatopathologist and Director of GI Pathology of the Irving facility, has over 14 years experience in hepatopathology, including medical, transplant, and neoplastic liver pathology. She previously served as the hepatopathologist at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, and at the University of Tennessee. These are just to name a few among a group of dedicated professionals who are committed to quality patient care. Liver biopsies can be sent to Miraca Life Sciences for routine diagnostic services or for expert second opinions. Our pathologists are easily accessible by phone or email.
