Bone Marrow Biopsy
Bone Marrow Examinations can be used to diagnose several Hematologic conditions including: leukemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, anemia, and pancytopenia
Normally samples are obtained through both aspiration and trephine biopsy.
- Aspiration - is a Percutaneous Procedure that takes a sample of semi-liquid bone marrow, examined by a hematology pathologist under a light microscope, analyzed by flow cytometry, chromosome analysis, or polymerase chain reaction(PCR)
- Trephine biopsy - A Percutaneous Procedure is used to extract a solid piece of bone marrow that is cylindrically shaped that is examined microscopically for cellularity and infiltrative processes
